Patriots drop semi-final to Sarnia to close out season

Saturday night The Steel City Patriots entertained The Sarnia Imperials in Northern Football Conference semifinal playoff action at Nelson Stadium before a raucous crowd looking to enjoy the exciting match up between the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams remaining in the NFC Playoffs.

The game was close statistically as both teams were kept under wraps by the opposing defensive teams and it came down to field position and capitalizing on the other teams mistakes. Unfortunately for SCP The 3rd ranked Imperials capitalized on The Pats mistakes to score 21 points enroute to a 44-15 victory which advanced Sarnia to The NFC Championship against THE 2017 National Champion GTA All Stars.

Leading the way for The Pats offensively were Jordan Steuer and Cordel Lewis who each scored a receiving touchdown off the arm of QB Josh Madden (13-29 for 112 yds and 2 Tds) and Rbs Dan Seymour and Justin Laroque. Defensively it was a team mentality as The vaunted defence allowed 168 yds of total offence and recovered 4 fumbles along the way.

Although the season did not end the way SCP had hoped, there is a lot of positive aspects of the season to focus on as they begin the off season. SCP had a massive turn around from 2017 going 1-7 to 2018 where SCP went 7-1 (8-2 over all). Also the roster was booted by a talented group of free agents who came in and fit in with the veterans like they were a well oiled machine. Statistically The Pats defence was one of the top defences n the league as they allowed just 31 pts all season and went 21 quarters without allowing a point and had 11 interceptions returned for a touchdown. I could list who made the biggest impact on the season but I would be typing all day. On all phases of the game it was a team effort from the starters to the back ups. Leading the way was one of the strongest most experienced coaching staffs around led by Head Coach Rob Tornifoglia, Barry Emo and Phil “Cosz” Costantini. They along with the training staff and off field volunteers led by Darlene Jagusic took the pressure off the coaches and players and let them concentrate on the game itself. The play of the 2018 Patriots opens the door to an exciting off season and a very strong SCP team for 2019.

Up next is the annual SCP awards banquet which will be held in September.
