Patterson’s late homer gives Cardinals eighth straight win

It’s been a hot summer in Hamilton but the Cardinals have arguably been hotter in the month of July. The team that in seasons past struggled to make it to .500 has in 2019 not only risen above but have gone on an unprecedented eight game winning streak through the month of July. And that streak continued on Thursday night in Barrie as the third place Hamilton Cardinals defeated the second place Baycats 2-1.

Barrie got on the board early with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With two out and behind in the count, left fielder Jordan Castaldo hit a solo shot homerun to give the Baycats the lead. The lead wouldn’t last though as the Cardinals tied the game in the top of the fifth. With one out and one man on base Mike Ceechetto hit an RBI double to left field to bring Jake Foden, who had singled in the last at bat, across the plate.

The game would turn in the Cardinals’ favour though in the top of the eighth inning. With one out Connor Patterson came to the plate and promptly sent his third homerun of the season over the fences to give Hamilton the lead and eventually the victory.

Ben Braun got the start and pitched 7.2 innings for the Cardinals picking up the win, giving up one run on six hits. It was Braun’s second win of the season. Kelvin Pichardo came in for relief in the 8th inning and picked up the save, giving up no runs and no hits in one and a third innings pitched.

Hamilton will return home to Carstar Field at Bernie Arbour Stadium tommorrow night for their first of four final games of the regular season. The Cardinals will host the first place Kitchener Panthers at 7:30pm.
