Quick start fades in Cardinals 13-5 loss to Toronto

Hamilton Cardinals raced out to an early lead, but playing conditions and the heat caught up to them as they dropped a hard-fought 13-5 decision to the Toronto Maple Leafs in one of two Intercounty Baseball League games played today in Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.

In other action, the Burlington Herd defeated then Guelph Royals 8-4 in David E. Hastings Stadium

The next action for Hamilton is Tuesday, Jul 3rd against the London Majors at 7:30 p.m. in Bernie Arbour Stadium. Bernie Arbour Stadium is situated at the corner of Mohawk Road East and Upper Kenilworth.

Grant Arnold and Laine Renaud led the Hamilton attack with two hits apiece. Arnold with a triple and Chris Beer with a double had the only extra base hits for the Cardinals today. Justin Marra was a one-man wrecking crew for the Leafs with two doubles and a home run, as he went four for four at the plate. He batted in five runs. Marcus Knecht added a double.

Zack Gonzalez took the loss for Hamilton. He gave up the eventual winning run in the sixth inning. He allowed two hits, walked a batter and struck out another. Justin Ciccatello got credit for the win for Toronto as he pitched five innings and allowed two hits. He retired three batters on strikes.

Hamilton and Toronto battled through eight innings with Toronto holding a slim one run lead until the top of the ninth inning when everything fell apart for the Cards. Toronto collected seven runs on six hits and two Hamilton errors in that inning.
