The Hamilton Bengals got off to a fierce start in St. Catharines on Friday night and jumped out to a quick lead. Although the Bengals cooled off in the later part of the game, a resurgance from the Spartans couldn’t recover as Hamilton defeated St. Catharines 15-10.
The first two periods belonged to the Bengals.
St. Catharines got off to a quick start with a goal at just 1:20 of the opening period, but after Luke Robinson evened the score seconds later with his first of four goals, the flood gates opened for Hamilton. Yvon Bolduc gave Hamilton the lead they would never give up with a power play goal at 5:56 of the first period. Bolduc would go on to net two more goals in the second period to earn his second hat trick in three games. George Pitt also netted a hat trick in the game, netting a goal in the second period and another pair in the third.
By the time the horn sounded to signal the end of the second period the Hamilton Bengals held a commanding 12-3 lead. Ty Argent, Caleb Wells, and Carter Schultz also found the back of the net in the first forty minutes.
Whatever the Spartans’ head coach said to his team must lit a fire for St. Catharines as they came out swinging in the third period.
Connor Aquanno got the Spartans right back into the game in the first half of the final frame with five straight goals, including a pair of power play markers. Cree Blakely, who assisted on two of Aquanno’s goals, also added a goal of his own late in the period. The Spartans would bring the game within a couple of goals, but they couldn’t complete the comeback as Hamilton went into the locker rooms with the 15-10 victory.
Jackson Brown made 37 saves on 47 shots in goal for Hamilton for the win.
The Bengals will finish their four game season opening road trip on Saturday night when they head down to Windsor to face the Clippers. Game time from Forest Glade is set for 7:00 PM.
Hamilton will finally host their home opener on Thursday, May 4th at 8:00 PM from Dave Andreychuck Mountain Arena. The Bengals will host the Six Nations Rebels.
