Renaud’s late homer leads to Cardinals’ third straight win

A two-run homerun from Laine Renaud in the eighth inning gave the Hamilton Cardinals the lead and the win in a 7-6 victory over the Guelph Royals. The win in the third in a row for the Cards who improve to 14-13 on the season. Guelph is now 15-14 on the season.

After a rather unevenful first half of the game the runs starting to come quickly in the back half of the game.

Hamilton got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Chris Beer crossed the plate after a wild pitch. That one run lead would last until until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Royals scored three, including a two run homerun from Josh Garton.

The Cardinals brought the game within a run in the top of the sixth when Chris Beer crossed the plate again thanks to a ground rule double from Justin Gideon. Beer would then extend the Cardinals lead in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single brought in Jake Foden and Laine Renaud. Beer would then cross the plate for the third time in the game two at bats later after a pass ball and wild pitch brought the Cardinals veteren home.

Leading 5-3 after the stretch the Royals would add three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. A bases loaded walk to Kyle Kush cut the Cards’ lead to one run. That was followed up by an RBI single by Sean Reilly and another bases loaded walk to Angel Villalona.

Now trailing 6-5 in the top of the eigth inning Laine Renaud brought the victory for the Cardinals. With two out and a runner on first Renaud hit his third homer of the year to give the Cardinals a one run lead.

That’s how the game would end with the Cardinals defeating the Royals 7-6.

Next up the Cardinals will have the day off on Wednesday before heading down the QEW to face the Welland Jackfish on Thursday night. Game time at Welland Stadium is set for 7:30pm ET.
