Six-run fourth stymies Cardinals

Hamilton Cardinals starting pitcher Tyler Howard and Barrie Baycats hurler Santos Arias were on a roll with Hamilton leading 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning when the proverbial roof fell in on the Cardinals.

In the top of the fourth, Barrie paced by Jordan Castaldo’s three-run home run 365 feet over the right field fence, scored six times en route to an 11-2 victory over the Cardinals. Barrie has six wins and six losses on the season while the Cards fall to 4-5.

In other action, Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Burlington Herd 9-8 at Christie Pits, while Kitchener Panthers shaded the Guelph Royals 3-2 at Kitchener. In a third game the Brantford Red Sox shutout the London Majors 6-0 in Brantford’s Arnold Anderson Stadium.

Wednesday, the Cards will play the Red Sox at Brantford at 8 p.m., and then play host to Kitchener on Friday night (June 15th) in the Welland Sports Complex at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (June 16th), Hamilton will play in Burlington in Nelson Park before travelling to Jack Couch Park the next day to play the Panthers.

Laine Renaud led the Cardinals with a run on three hits, while Connor Bowie chipped in with three more hits. Jacob Martins added two singles.

Howard (0-1) suffered the pitching loss going three and one-third innings, allowing seven runs on six hits including a home run. Arias got the win for the Baycats (2-1) as he pitched seven innings allowing two runs on nine hits. Hamilton pitching issued 12 walks to one by Barrie.
