Steelhawks fall to Whitby to end their season

A week after being eliminated from playoff contention, the Hamilton Steelhawks played their final game of the regular season when they hosted the Whitby Dunlops at the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena in ACH action on Saturday night. The teams would play an even first two periods before the Dunlops took control in the third to take the game 7-3. Eight different players for Hamilton would pick up a point in the game.

In the first period the teams would each score a goal. The Steelhawks were the first to score when Kevin Rebelo potted the puck past the Whitby goaltender. Just over six minutes later the Dunlops would tie the game. Both teams looked like they had taken the lead but the post would prevent that in the opening period.

Whitby would take the lead 6:24 into the second but Hamilton responded with a pair of goals 47 seconds apart. The first of the two goals came when Rob Vanwynsberghe jammed the puck in on a goal mouth scramble. Jordan Gignac followed that up with the go-ahead goal when he took a pass from Dylan Gilbert on a two on one rush. Late in the period the Dunlops would score shorthanded to once again tie the game before heading to the dressing room for the intermission.

Whitby would put the game away early in the third period, scoring three times within the first 107 seconds of the period. They would add one more just past the halfway mark of the third to make it a 7-3 final. Hamilton looked to have scored a pair of times in the final frame but the puck would ricochet off the post both times.
