Hamilton and Thorold met up for their first ever Allan Cup Hockey League meeting on Friday night. Both teams were looking for their first win in franchise history after losing their inaugural games last weekend. On this night it would be the Athletics defeating the Steelhawks by a score of 7-2. Thorold was led by Steve Zmudcynski who had a goal and three assists while Gary Clarke picked up a goal and an assist for Hamilton.
Thorold came out of the gate quickly as they scored on their first shot of the game just 14 seconds in. Fraser Smith picked up the goal from Zmudcynski. Smith would then give the A’s a 2-0 lead almost three and a half minutes later with JJ Martin and Tyler Turcotte getting the assists. Things just got worse as the Steelhawks would allow two goals in 14 seconds which gave Thorold a 4-0 lead.
At that point Coach Soules pulled starting goaltender Jeff Heartwell and replaced him with Ben Goss who was getting his first action of the season.
Hamilton would get on the board minutes later as Joel Petkoff picked up his first goal of the season with Clarke getting the only assist, his first point in the ACH. However, Thorold would score two more times before the end of the first period to take a 6-1 lead to the dressing room after 20-minutes.
In the second, the Steelhawks outshot Thorold 11-4 in the first 11-minutes of play. Clarke would get Hamilton back within four of the Athletics when he scored from Ryan Green at 11:08. Thorold would get their five goal lead back though with just over six minutes left in the period when Luke Lynes scored on the power play.
Thorold would go on to add a pair of goals in the final frame to take the game 9-2.
The Steelhawks will stay on the road for one more game as they face the Dundas Real McCoys on Friday November 6th at the J.L. Grightmire Arena in Dundas. The next night the same two team will face off as the Steelhawks celebrate their home opener on Saturday November 7th at the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena. Fans in attendance at the home opener will be featured in the filming of ‘First Round Down’ being shot at the arena. Game time both nights is 7:30 PM.
