Thunderbirds Drop Season Opener to Leafs

It was a rainy Sunday afternoon in Ontario as the Intercounty Baseball League started it’s 92nd season with the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the Hamilton Thunderbirds.

The T-Birds used five pitchers in the losing effort, with Tim Black taking the loss for Hamilton.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners at the corners, the Leafs scored first after an attempt to steal second base by Dan Gibbons. The throw from the plate didn’t catch Gibbons but allowed Degrace to score after an error at second base. The Leafs would add another run in the inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Hamilton would come within one run in the top of the eighth when Steve Martinow would cross the plate after a base hit by Mike Gottschalk. The comeback would be short-lived as the Leafs would add another run in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead. Steven Hubbs would score for the T-Birds in the ninth inning, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Leafs would hold on to take the game by a final score of 3-2.
