Can Don Robertson, President and General Manager of the Dundas Real McCoys pull a rabbit out of the hat one more time? That is the burning question.
Fans of the McCoys and the players believe it, and now the Valley Town squad is out to prove it, this week and next.
Last Friday, the McCoys faced the second place Stoney Creek Generals with a short bench.
The club played hard, and just when people began to think they were going to run out of the rink, they battled back only to lose to the Generals 9-3.
Times were different the following night, as the McCoys with virtually a full squad beat the Hamilton Steelhawks in the Dave Andreychuck Arena 5-2. The win gave them an Allan Cup Hockey playoff berth with one regular season game left to play at home.
This weekend, Thorold Athletics play the McCoys at 7:30 p.m. in the JL Grightmire Arena while the Generals have a date with the Brantford Blast in the Telephone City at 7:30 p.m. The next night, the Blast play a return engagement with Stoney Creek in the Gateway Ice Centre at 7:15 p.m., while Whitby travels to Hamilton to play the Steelhawks at 7:30 p.m. in the Andreychuck Arena.
“The lineup we had on Saturday is very close to our full team minus former National Hockey Leaguers Matt Foy (under suspension) and Jeff Macmillan, who was out of town,” said Robertson.
“We received a great effort from everyone to put us into the playoffs. Goalie Mike Mole was the Mike Mole of old. Everyone stepped up against a strong Hamilton club. This weekend’s results will determine which team we will play in the best-of-three first round playoff. We know that if we play hard we can compete with whichever team we play.”
Robertson noted that the problem now is to find an arena to play in on Wednesday or Thursday next week. Currently the Grightmire is booked for the Dundas Blues Junior C and Dundas Minor hockey playoffs.
Last Friday night, Nathan Pageau paced the Generals with a four-point night (a goal and three assists), while Jarrett Konkle chipped in with three goals. Igor Gongalsky connected for two more goals with Cam Fergus, Coner O Donnell, and Myles Falasca adding singles. For the McCoys, Ben Skinner scored twice, and Dan Brewer added a third. Captain Cam Watson assisted on all three goals.
The next night, Skinner scored three times with Shawn Snider and Steve Hurst adding a goal each. Snider picked up four assists and Watson three. Taylor Carnevale and Dean Strong replied for Hamilton.
