Environment Canada has issued a ‘Special Weather Statement’ for the City of Hamilton.

Freezing rain warning in effect for:

  • City of Hamilton

A prolonged period of freezing rain expected this evening into the overnight hours.

Freezing rain has developed over Southwestern Ontario. Freezing rain may be mixed with ice pellets or rain at times late this evening and overnight. The freezing rain will transition back to snow overnight, with 5 to 10 cm of snow possible.

This prolonged period of freezing rain is expected to bring up to 5 mm of ice accretion to many areas tonight.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.

A prolonged period of freezing rain likely late this afternoon through tonight.

Precipitation is forecast to begin as snow or ice pellets late this afternoon over parts of Southwestern Ontario before changing over to freezing rain by early this evening. Freezing rain may be mixed with ice pellets or rain at times. A prolonged period of freezing rain will bring measurable ice accretion to many areas. The freezing rain should transition to snow overnight.

This precipitation is associated with a low pressure system moving north from Texas which will track near the south shore of Lake Erie tonight.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.

Freezing rain likely on Friday.

Freezing rain is forecast to begin late Friday afternoon or early Friday evening over parts of southwestern Ontario and the Golden Horseshoe. Freezing rain may be mixed initially with rain or snow. A potential prolonged period of freezing rain could bring measurable ice accumulations to many areas. The freezing rain should transition to rain or snow later Friday night.

This precipitation is associated with a low pressure system moving north from Texas. There is still some uncertainty with the exact track of the system as it approaches Lake Erie, which will affect the exact timing and duration of the freezing rain.

Freezing rain warnings are likely to be issued as the event draws closer.
